Merry Christmas

Picture 7

Spending Christmas in the Caribbean has plenty of pros, but there are some Christmas-y things that we always miss this time of year.  Of course, there’s no snow or even chilly temperatures.  That means no “stockings hung by the chimney with care.”  Not many chimneys down here!  But we do have a real Christmas tree.  They’re brought to Tortola in large air conditioned containers and sold at the grocery stores.  I love decorating our Christmas tree and this year was so much fun!  Anna Drake was all about helping her dad!

And here’s the finished product.  Voila!

As beautiful as our Caribbean Christmas tree turned out, I can’t help but think…  “What would Christmas in NYC have been like?”  I’ve visited the Big Apple during December, but I think living there during this special time would have been a lot of fun, albeit cold.  My friend Alison, who moved to Brooklyn recently, is experiencing all that NYC has to offer.  Check out this list.  Doesn’t that look like a lot of fun?

To avoid becoming red & green with envy, I’m going to make my own list of BVI things to savor this holiday season.  {Thanks for the inspiration Alison!}

eat + drink

sip a painkiller at Soggy Dollar Bar
devour an Anegada lobster
enjoy dinner at CocoMaya on Virgin Gorda

shop

Okay, well, this may be where our lists must differ.  The shopping on Tortola simply cannot compare to all that NYC has to offer.   I’ve done nearly 100% of my Christmas shopping online.  We did find some toys for Anna Drake on island.  While the toys are more expensive here, it works out because  were simply too large to ship down here.

visit

sail to Jost van Dyke
swim Little Bay Beach
snorkel the Indians

My parents and sister are traveling to Tortola for Christmas, so with family around it will surely feel like the holidays.  We will embrace our latitude this Christmas!
